Exhibition games in football are seldom about the score. The contests are more about assessing talent and finding out if implemented schemes from training camp work in “live” situations. Both the USask Huskies and Alberta Golden Bears are fully aware of that following Saskatchewan’s 35-1 Canada West non-conference win over the U of A at Griffiths Stadium on Thursday night.
For Huskie players, coaches, family and fans this game centred around veteran quarterback Anton Amundrud, and about so much more than football. Thursday marked his first return to game action since late September of 2025 following a T-cell lymphoma cancer diagnosis last fall. In an interview with HuskieFAN in April Amundrud said football is “where he finds joy.” Following Thursday’s game that joy was easy to detect. “It was a lot of fun. I was antsy and giddy to get back out there.”
Amundrud (who was 9/14 for 154 yards in a quarter and a half of football) was asked to reflect on the last 11 months. He says teammates, family and the people around him made the difference. “The support system is everything”, he said. It takes a village. Everyone in Saskatoon, everyone on the team. It just feels good that they can feel that joy with me.”
