We’ve got to be more focused.” An honest assessment from Huskie head coach Scott Flory ahead of Friday’s homecoming game against the Calgary Dinos which is set for 7:00 PM at Griffiths Stadium.

The defending Hardy Cup champion USask Huskies lost the season opener to the Manitoba Bisons 40-22 in Winnipeg last Saturday. The wheels came off in the second quarter, when the Bisons outscored the visitors 21-1. “We were exposed”, said Flory. “There were a lot of busts, a lot of mistakes and a lot of coaching errors.”

USask, which has won its last six home openers, face a Dino team that trounced the favoured UBC Thunderbirds 32-7 last Friday at McMahon Stadium. Calgary quarterback David Jordan had 221 yards in passing and three touchdown tosses. Receiver Matt Sibley had over 100 yards in receiving with a major while running back Mathieu Clarke racked up 72 yards on the ground with a touchdown.

Flory also acknowledged that his troops face a very strong Dino defense this weekend. “We are going against a really good defensive line. They are veteran, they are big and they are strong. We have to find ways to get our guys the football.”

The Huskies did not have a 100-yard receiver or a 100-yard rusher in last weekend’s defeat in Manitoba. Flory is looking for major improvements up front this weekend to rectify the issue. “The offensive line (against Manitoba) was not good enough. It was not clean enough on our end.”

The head coach says physicality against the Dinos will be a key for Friday night. “I expect from the first play there’s going to be people on the turf’, Flory said. “We are going to come out physical and flying with energy.”

Friday night’s festivities start with the Rally Alley at 5:00 PM on the practice field to the west of Griffiths Stadium. Kick-off for Friday night’s Dino-Huskie game is set for 7:00 PM. Pre-game coverage on the free HuskieFAN app starts at 6:45 PM.
