Milestone goals highlight Huskies sweep of Dinos

A pair of veteran blueliners scored their first U SPORTS goals as the Huskies women’s hockey team completed a sweep of the Calgary Dinos with a 3-2 win at Father David Bauer Arena on Saturday.

Third-year Huskie Hallie Franklin opened the scoring and fourth-year rearguard Makenna Stevens netted the eventual game winner to complete a successful opening weekend for Saskatchewan.

“It was good to see our culture and identity. I think we had some good chances to connect and it’s always fun when you see everything you’ve been working on come together,” Stevens said.

After overcoming a somewhat scrambly effort to claim a 3-2 shootout victory in their season opener, the Dogs looked much sharper in the rematch, outshooting the Dinos 17-4 in the first period and taking the lead as Franklin pinched in from the point and jammed a rebound home for the first goal of her Huskies career.

The Dinos answered back in the second with Mikayla Blomquist deflecting a point shot past Clara Juca with what appeared to be a high stick. However, after a brief discussion between the referees, the goal was upheld.

The Huskies got back in the driver’s seat in the final frame as Peppi Virtanen pounced on a turnover in the left faceoff circle and sniped the puck over the shoulder of Dinos netminder Maisie Cope for her first goal of the season.

On the very next shift, with Saskatchewan applying more pressure, Stevens fired a shot from the line that was blocked but the puck came right back to her and she made good on the second try, scoring her first Huskies goal in her 68th regular season game with the program.

Doing so in her hometown of Calgary only made the milestone goal that much sweeter for Stevens.

“I was just so excited with how the shift was going and how we were all working together. It was such a team effort, I just happened to be in the right spot at the right time,” she said.

The Dinos made things interesting in the late stages as Saskatoon native Sydney Mercier trimmed the gap to one with Cope pulled for an extra attacker, but the Huskies held on for the final 1:19 to seal the victory.

“You walk that fine balance between doing all you can to get points and making sure we’re playing the right way for the long game. We had a little hiccup in the middle there after their goal, had a bit of a sag, but I thought in the third we just calmed things down and played boring hockey,” head coach Steve Kook said.

The Huskies now look ahead to their home opener against the Manitoba Bisons on October 16. The Bisons are 0-2 to start the season after being swept at home by UBC. Game time on Friday is set for 7:00 p.m.
