Huskies jump out to 3-0 start
First-year goaltender Addison Tomes, from Winnipeg, made 20 saves in her University of Saskatchewan debut Friday night, backstopping the undefeated Huskies to a narrow 1-0 victory over the Manitoba Bisons at Merlis Belsher Place. “She’s a Manitoba girl”, said Steve Kook. “She wanted this one.”
Tomes appeared calm for most of the evening as Manitoba heavily outshot the home team 20-9. Her most critical work came during a lopsided second period where the Bisons controlled the pace, outshooting Saskatchewan 9-4.
Manitoba’s potent offence turned up the pressure with three second-period power-play opportunities, but Tomes held the Herd at bay. The Huskies failed to convert on two power plays of their own during the same stretch. The offensive breakthrough came early in the third period. Veteran forward Jayde Cadieux found the back of the net at the 1:44 mark, scoring what would stand as the game-winning goal.
Following Cadieux’s marker, the Bisons mounted a furious counter-attack, outshooting the Huskies 8-2 in the third period. Tomes turned aside every desperate attempt down the stretch to secure the shutout victory and keep Saskatchewan’s unblemished season record intact.
