Bisons deal Huskies first loss of season

Dawson Pasternak’s goal with less than four minutes remaining made the difference as the Manitoba Bisons handed the Huskies men’s hockey team its first loss of the campaign on Saturday afternoon.

The Dogs let a third period lead slip away as they settled for a split of their weekend set in Winnipeg.

The two teams faced a quick turnaround for their second meeting in as many days, hitting the ice at Wayne Fleming Arena just over 16 hours after the Dogs blanked the Bisons 4-0 in the series opener, and the result was a game with plenty of whistles and very little flow. The Huskies still outshot the Herd 24-10 over the first two periods but could only muster a handful of quality scoring chances and the game remained scoreless until the third.

The visitors finally broke through 22 seconds into the final frame as Raphael Pelletier batted a rebound past Manitoba goaltender Matthew Kieper for his second goal of the season.

The Bisons equalized at the 8:44 mark with Joel Purdom converting a centering pass from Skyler Bruce for Manitoba’s first goal of the weekend, snapping Saskatchewan’s shutout streak at 181:05, and Pasternak found the net with 3:33 to play, beating a screened Bryan Thomson to put the home side in front.

Thomson went to the bench for an extra attacker with a minute and a half left in regulation but Kieper held down the fort in the Bisons net, securing Manitoba’s second consecutive split to begin the season.

The loss ends a run of 14 straight wins in Winnipeg for the Dogs, who hadn’t tasted defeat in the Manitoba capital since Oct. 20, 2017.

The Huskies are now 3-1 ahead of a home-and-home series with the provincial rival Regina Cougars, who are also 3-1 after losing to Calgary on Saturday. The teams will meet on Friday at Co-operators Arena in Regina and the rematch will take place the following night at Merlis Belsher Place. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
