Two-minute breakdown hurts Huskies in Langley

Nov 7, 2026 | 12:33 AM

The Huskies women’s hockey team did many things well against the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday but a brief lapse late in the second period allowed the Spartans to take control en route to a 4-2 victory at the Arenas in Langley, B.C.

TWU captain Kara Yackel broke one Canada West record and tied another with three goals in a span of 1:21 to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead as the Spartans went on to claim a fifth straight win over the Huskies.

The natural hat trick smashed the previous mark held by Elizabeth Lang, who scored three times in 5:55 in the first period of a 4-1 Calgary Dinos victory over the Regina Cougars on Nov. 27, 2021. Yackel’s second and third goals came 17 seconds apart, matching the record for the fastest two goals by one player set by UBC’s Nikola Brown-John in 2014.

The first meeting in Langley between the Huskies and Spartans in nearly two years opened with a fast-moving first period that saw the Dogs draw first blood just over four minutes in as Ava Bergman intercepted a clearing attempt in the slot and beat TWU goaltender Olivia Davidson for her first goal since Jan. 17, 2025. The third-year forward sat out the entire 2025-26 season due to injury.

The Huskies continued to create opportunities throughout the opening period and into the second but failed to capitalize, then Yackel took over, giving the Spartans a two-goal lead after 40 minutes.

Peppi Virtanen trimmed the deficit in half 7:04 into the third, just after serving the game’s first penalty. The Finnish forward exited the box in time to corral a stretch pass from Anna Benoit before breaking in alone and sliding a backhand past Davidson for her third goal of the season.

However, just past the midway point of the frame, Brook Dorash beat a screened Clara Juca to restore the two-goal cushion.

The Dogs finally got their first and only power play of the night with a little over three minutes to play and pulled Juca as it progressed to create a six-on-four advantage, but the closest they came to scoring was a shot off the goalpost.

The loss drops USask to 4-4-1 on the season while TWU is now 6-2-1. The teams will meet again on Saturday at 3 p.m. PST as the Huskies look for a split of the weekend series. Listen to the game on the free HuskieFAN app.
