A pair of two time Stanley Cup champions will be in Saskatoon on Thursday, October 20th, for the 13th annual Wright Construction Off The Leash Luncheon at Prairieland Park. Andrew Ladd and Kris Versteeg will be the guests for this year’s edition of the fall fundraiser that assists the Huskie men’s hockey team with scholarships.

For over a decade the luncheon has featured some of hockey’s biggest names including Brendan Shanahan, Brett Hull, Lanny McDonald and Chris Chelios. In 2021 Oilers General Manager Ken Holland joined former Huskie head coach Mike Babcock on stage. “Kudos to all the guys who have put the work in before me”, said luncheon co-chair Kohl Bauml. “It’s a well oiled machine.”

Bauml was a centre with the Huskies from 2016 to 2020 and knows how important scholarship funds are to players who are paying for their education. “It’s a big weight off of the guys’ shoulders”, he said. “I was fortunate enough to receive scholarship funding like these guys do.”

Several members of the luncheon committee have a long history with the Huskie men’s hockey program. People like Dan Leier and Shannon Briske, who played for the team in the 1980’s and 1990’s, work hard at making the luncheon a success. For Bauml, a younger member of the alumni, it’s rewarding to see the loyalty to the team. “It’s crazy to see the bonds and the friendships that have lasted for so many years”, he said.

The 2022 edition of the Wright Construction Off The Leash Luncheon features two western Canadian born NHL players that enjoyed lengthy careers.

Andrew Ladd, from Maple Ridge, BC, was a member of the Stanley Cup winning Carolina Hurricanes in his rookie season in 2006. Ladd, who dressed for more than 1,000 games in the NHL, earned his second Stanley Cup ring in Chicago in 2010. Ladd also played for the Thrashers, Jets, Islanders and Coyotes.

Kris Versteeg played in more than 600 NHL games in his 11 year career before announcing his retirement in 2020. The Lethbridge product was part of the 2010 and 2015 Chicago Blackhawk teams that won Stanley Cup championships. Versteeg also played with the Flyers, Panthers, Leafs, Kings and Flames.

Comedian Kelly Taylor, who has been the Master of Ceremonies of the Wright Construction Off The Leash Luncheon for over a decade, will again be back for this year’s event.
