Second period lapse costly as Huskies suffer first loss

Oct 8, 2022 | 11:53 PM

An offensive outburst in the second period was the difference as the Calgary Dinos handed the Saskatchewan Huskies a 5-2 loss on Saturday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

The Dinos broke open a scoreless game with three goals in a span of 2:22 and the Huskies never recovered, suffering their first loss of the young season.

Saskatchewan had plenty of chances to open the scoring in the first, outshooting the Dinos 18-6 but Calgary netminder Carl Tetachuk stopped everything that came his way, helping the home team escape the period without surrendering a goal. Tetachuk saves his best for a four minute Huskies power play which generated several chances, including a shot that rang off the post.

With their goaltender making his presence felt the Dinos took advantage in the second as Zach Wytinck fired a one-timer past Jordan Kooy from the slot. The chance came after a Huskies turnover inside their own blue line. Josh Maser made it 2-0 just 39 seconds later and before the Dogs could catch their breath, Jake Gricius netted a third goal to inflate the Dinos lead.

Vince Loschiavo got one back on a Saskatchewan power play with a one-time blast off a great feed from Connor Hobbs, but before the period was done, Marty Westhaver restored the Dinos’ three-goal lead after some good work by Calgary’s fourth line.

Liam Keeler tallied the Huskies second power play goal of the game midway through the third to give his team some life, but that’s as close as they would get. Tyson Upper completed the scoring as he potted an empty net goal with under two minutes to play.

Tetachuk put in a first star performance, stopping 42 of 44 Huskies shots on the night.

It’s the second straight year in which the Huskies have been knocked from the ranks of the unbeaten by Calgary. The Dogs are now 3-1-0 as they prepare to travel to British Columbia to face the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend.
