Huskie coach Brandin Cote has said it time and time again. You can’t take any Canada West hockey opponent lightly. After losing by four goals on Friday night, the MacEwan Griffins made the Huskies work hard for two points in the second game on Saturday. Saskatchewan needed a shoot-out to pull out a 2-1 win the series finale.

The Huskies dominated play in the first period, outshooting the Griffins 10-4. With the game still scoreless, MacEwan increased intensity in the second period and forced U of S goaltender Roddy Ross to make some key saves. Saskatchewan opened the scoring, while shorthanded, as Justin Ball was able to beat Griffins goaltender Thomas Davis. To MacEwan’s credit they did not let up and tied the game less than three minutes later when Ethan Strang beat Ross to tie the game at 1.

After a scoreless third period, both teams traded chances in a wild 5 minute 3-on-3 overtime session. Both Ross and Thomas made some amazing saves. The game was then decided by a shootout. Two MacEwan shooters hit goalposts, while Ross dived back to make a highlight reel stop on another Griffin shot that fluttered through the air before landing in the crease.

Huskie forward Carter Stebbings, the fifth Saskatchewan shooter, was able to solve Thomas and lift the home side to the hard fought win. “I just kind of locked in on my forehand side”, said Stebbings. “I was a little nervous going in, but it felt really nice.”

Ross was named the games’ first star with 23 saves in regulation and some key stops in overtime and the shoot-out. . “(MacEwan) was a totally different team tonight”, said Ross. “When it comes to shoot-outs it’s what I like the most because then I get to do my thing.” Davis was also strong in net making 32 stops in regulation before also elevating his game in overtime and in the shoot-out.

The Huskies, who are now 4 and 0, have a bye on the October 13-14 weekend, before an October 20-21 home-and-home series with the Regina Cougars.
