A Spartan sweep for the U of S Huskies

Jan 13, 2024 | 9:10 PM

“I was excited!” 2nd-year Huskie Jasper Desmarais smiled when describing what proved to be Saturday’s night’s game winning goal in Saskatchewan’s 3-2 win over Trinity Western at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday night. “I took it away from one of their forwards, got a shot and got my own rebound”, she said. Desmarais’ second goal of the season came with 4:59 remaining in the first period, helping the home team to a 3-0 lead.

The Huskies jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of power play goals in the early stages of the game. Kara Kondrat scored at 3:23, followed by Mallory Dyer’s 8th of the season at 5:27. Spartan goaltender, Kate Fawcett, was pulled after allowing 2 goals on Saskatchewan’s first 3 shots of the game.

Both teams combined for 11 minor penalties. “I didn’t agree with many of the calls, even the ones we got”, said head coach Steve Kook. “But it is what it is. (Kondrat’s) unit started both power plays and it didn’t take them long to get a goal, so good for them.” Saskatchewan was 2-for-7 with the player advantage, while the Spartans were 1-for-4.

Despite having just 6 wins in 20 games this season, Trinity Western, led by interim head coach Peter Hay, works hard. The Spartans fought back with two second period goals. 2nd-year defender, Ella Boon, scored at 2:50 of the second period, then 2nd-year winger, Kara Yackel, cut Saskatchewan’s lead to one with 4:22 left to go in the middle frame on the power play. The visitors outshot the Huskies 11-7 in the second period.

Despite being outshot 11-7 again in the third period, the Huskies limited Spartan chances. “We just reminded out crew to just play the game”, said Kook. “You just have to establish puck control and go from there.” Camryn Drever made 29 stops in the Huskie net for her 12th win of the season in 17 appearances.

With the victory, Saskatchewan remains two points back of 3rd place Mount Royal in the Canada West standings, as the Cougars swept Manitoba in their 2-game series. The Huskies host the MacEwan Griffins on January 19th and 20th at Merlis Belsher Place. Friday’s game starts at 7:00, while Saturday’s contest starts at 5:00.
