Drever and Dyer shine in shut-out win

The Huskie women’s hockey team turned in a stellar performance, both on and off the ice, on Friday night. In the annual “Play for a Cure” game, the Huskies blanked the MacEwan Griffins 2-0 at Merlis Belsher Place. Goaltender Camryn Drever registered her 13th win of the season with an 18 save performance.

3rd year Huskie, Mallory Dyer, scored at the 4:01 mark of the first period. “I was able to get a sneaky angle on the goalie”, Dyer said. “This is one of the first weekends that we had a good start on the Friday game. I think that was a big focus for tonight.” The Saskatchewan left winger is on a three-game goal scoring streak and now has scored 10 times this season. 5th year forward, Sophie Lalor, scored the insurance goal into the empty net with 48 seconds remaining in the hockey game.

Despite having just three wins this season, the Griffins had a great compete level. MacEwan’s leading scorer Jesse Jack and teammates generated some quality chances while goaltender Brianna Sank made 30 saves to keep the game close. “We knew that they’d be coming out hard”, said Dyer. They are a hard- working team. We went in not taking anything for granted.”

2024 marked the 15th year that the Huskies have staged a Play for a Cure game for cancer. “It’s one of my favourite nights of the whole year”, said head coach Steve Kook. “The best part about it is, it’s 100% player driven. They choose the charity, they design the jerseys and they ask the alumni for help.” 27 special made jerseys were auctioned off at an average price of $400.00 for this year’s charity…The Matt Cook Foundation. One jersey went for $2400.00

Saskatchewan’s record improved to 15-4-1-1 with the win. The Griffins face the Huskies again on Saturday afternoon at 5:00pm at Merlis Belsher Place. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
