1st year Huskie, Ava Bergman, made the most of her opportunity on Saturday in Saskatchewan’s 2-1 win over the MacEwan Griffins at Merlis Belsher Place. The Winnipeg born forward, who was in the line-up after not playing on Friday, assisted on Kelsey Hall’s game winning goal midway through the third period. Bergman, playing in just her sixth game, won a clean face-off in the Griffin’s zone to set up Hall’s 7th goal of the season. It was Bergman’s first point as a Huskie.

Veteran Sophie Lalor opened the scoring for the home side with a power play goal at the 11:18 mark of the first period. 3rd year Griffin defender, Joie Simon, tied the game with her second goal of the season three and a half minutes later. Goaltenders Colby Wilson of the Huskies and Brianna Sank of the Griffins made many key stops in the low scoring contest. Wilson made 21 saves for her 3rd win of the season. Sank, who faced 31 shots in Friday’s 2-0 Huskie win, made 34 saves on Saturday.

With the two victories Saskatchewan remains two points back of third place Mount Royal in the Canada West standings. The Cougars have 36 points, the Huskies sit with 34. Mount Royal pulled out 3-0 and 2-1 wins over Regina on the weekend. The Huskies visit the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton on January 26th and 27th.
