Huskies let home ice lead get away

Mount Royal takes control in second period in three goal win

Feb 2, 2024 | 10:08 PM

The defending USports women’s hockey champions overcame an early deficit to post a 4-1 win over the U of S Huskies on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place. The Mount Royal Cougars scored twice in the second period and added two more goals in the final frame for their 19th victory of the season. 3rd year Huskie Kelsey Hall opened the scoring at the 5:15 mark of the opening period, from there it was all Cougars.

“In the second period, we didn’t win any puck races”, said Huskie head coach Steve Kook. “We did it to ourselves. We went off script…totally off script!” Mount Royal was the faster team in the period, outshooting Saskatchewan 13-9, and it paid off. Jordyn Hutt and Ava Metzger of the Cougars scored back-to-back goals less than four minutes apart in the late stages of the period and a 1-0 Huskie lead was suddenly a 2-1 deficit.

5th year goaltender Camryn Drever had a chance to set a program record for most wins in a season, but the Cougars generated the majority of the chances in the final 40 minutes. Drever had to make saves on at least three breakaway chances in the hockey game. “If I’m Cam, I might be upset at the players in front of me”, said Kook. Aliya Jomha and Jerzey Watteyne scored the third period goals for Mount Royal. The Cougars outshot the Huskies 8-5 in the final 20 minutes.

4th year Cougar goaltender Kaitlyn Ross got the win with a 23 save performance. She now leads the conference with 15 wins this season. Mount Royal was 1 for 1 on the power play, the Huskies 0 for 3. The Cougars moved in to sole possession of 3rd place in the Canada West conference with 38 points, the Huskies have 36.

Kook’s strategy for Saturday’s second game of this series is simple. “You have to drop this one”, he said. Let it go by, stay on script and win a battle.” Game two is set for 5:00 pm at Merlis Belsher Place and can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca
