A Cougar sweep

Mount Royal shuts out Huskies in series finale

Feb 3, 2024 | 10:00 PM

For the first time this season the Huskie women’s hockey team was swept on home ice by an opponent. The Mount Royal Cougars followed up a 4-1 win on Friday with a 2-0 win on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place. The game had a playoff feel to it as both teams competed hard in all areas of the ice. It was an entertaining game, but fans had to wait to witness offense.

The visitors took advantage of a Huskie miscue and 4th year forward Athena Hauck scored the game’s first goal at the 5:26 mark of the third period. Saskatchewan pressed for the equalizer in the final minute with an extra skater on the ice, however Cougar captain Lindsay Janes put an insurance goal in to the net with 12 seconds remaining.

Star goaltender Camryn Drever was denied a franchise record 15th season win for the second straight night. The 5th year Huskie from Edmonton made a number of big saves on 26 Mount Royal shots. Despite being credited with just 15 shots in the game, Huskie head coach, Steve Kook, was much happier with his team’s effort on Saturday.

Saskatoon’s Scout Anderson got the shutout for her 5th win of the season for the Cougars. Both teams were 0 for 4 on the power play. Mount Royal will finish no worse than third in the Canada West standings, Saskatchewan can finish no higher than fourth. The Cougars have 38 points and have claimed the season series over Saskatchewan who has 34.

Prior to the game the Huskies honoured fifth year players Camryn Drever, captain Kennedy Brown, Isabella Pozzi, Kara Kondrat, Sophie Lalor and Kenzie Lausberg. The Huskies finish up the regular season with February 9th and 10th contests in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons. Friday’s game starts at 7:00 pm and puck drop for Saturday’s contest is at 3:00 pm. Both games can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca
