Huskie women’s team advances to final four

The Huskie women’s basketball team punched its ticket to the Canada West semi-finals on Thursday with a 74-60 win over the UBC Okanagan Heat in Abbotsford, BC. Late in the first quarter, Saskatchewan went on a 7-0 run that carried over to the second quarter to jump out to a 27-17 lead. Another 10-0 run, later in the half, helped the Huskies open a 39-25 advantage.

3rd year guard, Tea DeMong, who was named a conference all-star prior to the tournament, led all Huskie scorers with 19 points. Forward Carly Ahlstrom, a 3rd team all-star, poured in 13. Jaeli Ibbetson had an 18 point game for the Heat.

The Huskies now face the host Fraser Valley Cascades in the semi-finals on Friday at 5 pm. (Saskatchewan time) Victoria takes on Alberta in the other final four match up. The Vikes pulled out a three-point win over the second ranked UBC Thunderbirds to advance, while the Pandas defeated provincial rival, Calgary, in the quarterfinals.

Earlier this week Huskie coach Lisa Thomaidis was named the Canada West coach of the year for the 6th time. Thomaidis has led Saskatchewan to 8 Canada West titles and this summer will serve as Germany’s head coach at the Olympic Games in Paris.

The Huskie men’s team suffered a 62-55 loss to Brandon on Wednesday at the Canada West men’s basketball championships in Winnipeg. Guard Fisayo Moibi had 12 points for the Huskies. Sultan Haider Bhatti of the Bobcats led all scorers with 19.

Saskatchewan forward Easton Thimm was named the Canada West rookie of the year prior to the start of the tournament. Thimm led the conference in offensive rebounds and was the third best shooter in Canada West at 54.5%. Huskie fifth year guard, Alex Dewar, was named a 3rd team all-star.
