Huskie women’s hockey coach, Steve Kook, concisely summed it up. “She is just one of the best teammates we’ve ever had.” Kook was speaking about fifth-year goaltender Camryn Drever who, on Wednesday, was named the Canada West women’s hockey player and goaltender of the year.

Drever set a program record with 15 wins in 23 starts in 2023-23. She had the country’s best save percentage at .954 along with a stingy 1.33 goals against average. “You don’t realize how good of a year it is, then 15 wins creeps on you”, Kook said. “She’s just solid every single night.” When asked what attributes best described the Edmonton product Kook said, “She shows up. That’s a big part of it…extra goaltending work, extra goaltending sessions, she’s one of the fittest athletes on our team.”

The Huskies’ last Canada West player of the year honour went to goaltender Jessica Vance in 2018. Vance served as one of Drever’s mentors, when Camryn joined the program for the 2018-19 season. “Jess led the way for her”, said Kook. “(Vance) was intense and worked hard, like Cam is now.”

Saskatchewan’s fifth-year forward, Sophie Lalor, was recognized for having the conference’s best sportsmanship and athletic ability. Lalor had just 8 penalty minutes in 28 regular season games while putting up 22 points. “That’s Soph”, said Kook. “She has so much offensive prowess. Her hockey sense and her brain are the best parts of her game. She’s in control, understated and just very calculated. She’s a business major!”

The Huskies were eliminated in the first round of the Canada West playoffs but will serve as hosts of the 2024 GFL USports women’s hockey championships, presented by Connect Energy on March 14th to 17th at Merlis Belsher Place. All Huskie games can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app and HuskieFAN.ca.
