Six Huskie athletes brought home hardware from the 2024 USports wrestling championships on March 2nd in Guelph, Ontario. The University of Saskatchewan finished third in the women’s team standings behind Brock and Alberta, while five Saskatchewan athletes medaled. (Abby Wolff-50kg, Sierra Mullin-53kg, SueAnne Harms-56kg, Caitlin Clatney-59kg and Myah Phillips-83kg.) The Huskies women’s team had 55 points in the team standings.

Brock won both the women’s and men’s titles. The Huskies finished 5th on the men’s side with 35 points. Judah Arthurs took home a silver medal in the 82-kilogram class. The Brock Badgers won a combined 16 medals. (8 gold, 6 silver, 2 bronze) It was the Badgers’ 11th national title and 10th in the last 11 years. Brock’s men’s team has won 9 consecutive titles and 22 in the history of the program. The University of Alberta finished 2nd in both the men’s and women’s final team standings.

The Huskie women’s basketball team will be the top seed for the 2024 USports women’s basketball championships in Edmonton from March 7th to 10th. Under coach Lisa Thomaidis, Saskatchewan racked up an impressive 19 and 1 regular season record and claimed the Canada West title with a 73-42 win over Alberta.

The OUA champion Carleton Ravens are the second seed, the AUS champion St. Mary’s Huskies are third, while Laval, the RSEQ winners, are seeded fourth. Alberta, Queens, Fraser Valley and Calgary round out the field of teams.

The U of S will face Calgary in a quarter-final match-up on Thursday, March 7th at 7 pm, Saskatchewan time. The gold medal game will be played at 7:30 pm on Sunday, March 10th.

Dawson Holt, a third year forward from the Huskie men’s hockey team, was given the Canada West community service award last Thursday. The Saskatoon product has served as president of the Huskie Athletic Council for the last three years and has given back to the community by volunteering at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital and at KidSport breakfasts. Holt had 22 points in 28 regular season games for the Huskies during the 2023-24 season.
