Huskies struggle against the Bisons

“We just weren’t in the game.”

That was Steve Kook’s reaction following a 2-0 loss to the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place. The University of Saskatchewan Huskies head coach appeared to be puzzled at his team’s decisions at times.

“You’re an offensive player, make a play. Find it!”

The Bisons opened the scoring on an Addison Greve goal five minutes into the first period. Manitoba, a team that scored just once in its first three games of the regular season, struck again five minutes into the second period when Norah Collins notched her first of the season.

The Huskies had to kill off three consecutive penalties in the middle frame, limiting their offensive chances. Both Kook and Bison head coach Jordan Colliton looked confused at some of the calls being made by the officials.

“We had no idea,” said Kook. “Both coaches had no idea what they were calling.”

Manitoba was assessed four straight minor penalties in the third period, yet the Huskies were still outshot 8-5 in the final frame.

“We can’t have bystanders here,” said Kook.

When asked about moving ahead, the Huskies head coach looked at the big picture.

“It’s not punishment time,” he said. “We are 3-1. This is a good wake-up call.”

Manitoba goaltender Jenna Goertzen made 15 saves for her first shutout of the season. The 1-3 Bisons host the Alberta Pandas on Oct. 23 and 24 in Winnipeg.

Saskatchewan is in a first-place tie with the 3-1 UBC Thunderbirds on top of the Canada West, West Division standings. The Huskies face the Regina Cougars in a home-and-home series, which starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 at Merlis Belsher Place.
