The University of Regina Rams are making a third straight appearance in the Hardy Cup.

The Rams rode a solid defence and a strong run game to a 39-27 victory over the USask Huskies at Griffiths Stadium on Saturday night in the Canada West semi-finals.

Regina recovered two fumbles and forced Huskie quarterback Anton Amundrud to throw four interceptions. While Amundrud, the Huskies’ fifth-year quarterback, had 387 yards through the air, the turnovers were costly.

The Rams took command in the second quarter by scoring three majors. Regina quarterback Owen Sieben hit Nicholas Sirleaf on a 27-yard strike to make it 12-3. Later, on third and short, Ram running back Carter Ashman lined up under centre and ran for a 63-yard touchdown run to lift the visitors to an 18-3 lead. A little over three minutes later, Sieben connected with Adley Mayala for a 21-yard score as Regina opened up a 25-3 lead. It was 26-10 at the break thanks to an Aulain Penner touchdown catch in the final minute of the first half.

Early in the third quarter, Ram defensive back Chase Murray intercepted an errant Amundrud throw, allowing Regina to take the ball at the Huskie 43-yard line. Sieben then found Michael Eagle Bear for a 14-yard major as the U of R took a 32-10 lead.

The Huskies pulled to within nine points in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of a Ram special teams miscue. Regina punter Ty Gorniak mishandled a snap, which set the Huskies up in the Regina red zone to start the fourth quarter. Amundrud found Thomas Jule for a five-yard score to make it a 33-24 game.

The teams exchanged field goals, keeping it a two-score game. With 3:20 left, Kaeden Brennan made Regina’s fourth interception of the game to seal the victory. Brennan, Tyleon Ocaya, Murray and Max Polischuk had the interceptions for Regina.

Regina’s defence not only forced turnovers, but held the Huskies to 47 rushing yards. Sieben threw for a season-high 216 yards and three touchdowns. Aided by the 63-yard touchdown run in the first half, Ashman finished with 139 yards on 16 carries.

A number of Huskies graduate from the program, including Amundrud, who was the top U Sports passer with 2,686 yards in eight regular-season games. Running back Kayden Miller, offensive lineman Jack Warrack, receiver Rhett Vavra and defensive lineman Riece Kack are among those who have put on a Huskie jersey for the last time.

Huskie head coach Scott Flory reacted to the loss.

Huskie quarterback Anton Amundrud commented on the loss and on ending his USask football career.
