Huskies fall one minute short of split with Spartans
The Huskies women’s hockey team weathered the storm for 59 minutes before a late tying goal and an overtime winner lifted the Trinity Western Spartans to a 2-1 victory and a full four points from the weekend series in Langley, B.C.
Jacquelyne Chief scored her first goal of the season seven minutes into the second period and the lead stood until a deft tip by Kyra Anderson tied the game with 1:04 left in the third. Audrina Freeman completed the comeback, dancing through the Dogs zone against a tired trio before going upstairs on Emma Backman for the winning goal in overtime.
The Spartans were in the offensive zone for what seemed like a long time throughout the game’s opening ten minutes then the Huskies returned the favour for a few minutes before the game settled in as both teams evened out.
The Huskies were whistled for the first three penalties of the contest including two back-to-back in the second period but their penalty kill completely stifled the Trinity Western power play and gave all the momentum to the Dogs leading to Chief’s goal from distance on a shot that got past a screened Grace Deveau.
