A fifth-year veteran and a first year goaltender were a big part of the Huskies’ 5-0 win over Mount Royal in game one of the Canada West men’s hockey final on Friday night in Calgary. Chantz Petruic, who had five playoff points in Saskatchewan’s four previous playoff games, scored a goal per period in a convincing win. Petruic opened the scoring on a low shot on a Saskatchewan power play at 10:54 of the first period to quiet a loud Mount Royal crowd at the Flames Community Arena. (Capacity 500)

Petruic then notched his fourth playoff goals at 12:15 of the middle frame to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. The Huskies, who were outshot 13-7 in the second period, made good on their opportunities as Ethan Regnier was in the right spot at the right time to help the Huskies to a 3-0 lead with 1:54 to go in the second period.

Five minutes in to the third, Petruic struck again on the man advantage, making good on an impressive set up from Logan Bairos. Keaton Sorenson rounded out the Huskie scoring with less than three minutes remaining in the final period.

Goaltender Nolan Maier improved to 5 and 0 during the USask playoff run making 33 stops, 13 in the second period alone. Maier, who who had an impressive 2.98 goals against average in the regular season, had a 1.20 goals against average in the four previous playoff games leading up to Friday’s Canada West championship series opener.
