Jake Farrell is in the middle of a remarkable football run. The USask Huskies’ third year quarterback took part in the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ rookie camp as part of the CFL’s mentorship program at Griffiths Stadium last week. It’s the latest chapter of an eventful few months for Farrell.

In October of 2025, the Holy Cross graduate was pressed into Canada West football service when veteran Saskatchewan starter Anton Amundrud was diagnosed with lymphoma.

Farrell helped lead the Huskies to a 3-0 regular season finish, top spot in the 2025 Canada West standings, a 25-24 Hardy Cup win over UBC, a 22-11 win over Queen’s in the Mitchell Bowl and a Vanier Cup appearance. While compiling the 5-1 record, Farrell threw for close to 1600 yards and had 13 touchdown tosses with the Huskies last season.

Fast forward to May of 2026, and he’s working along side Rider quarterback Trevor Harris and other CFL players under the watch of Grey Cup winning head coach Corey Mace. “Trevor is a great teacher and a great quarterback”, said Farrell. He has also noticed the level of commitment from players. “Honestly, it’s just the way these quarterbacks act and how professional are. On the practice field, in the weight room, in the locker room…that’s what I’m going to take away. Just being 1% better every day like Trevor (Harris) says.”

Rider offensive coordinator Marc Mueller remembers being invited to Edmonton’s CFL camp in 2011 when he was a Canada West quarterback with the Regina Rams. Like Farrell, Mueller quickly learned about commitment at the professional level. “I remember being completely gassed and thinking, I’ve got to run more”, joked Mueller. “When Ricky Ray showed up, I thought, I’m just going to follow THIS guy around.”

“Jake has really good guys to learn from”, said Mueller. “I think it’s a real good opportunity to get better.” When asked about Farrell’s skill set, Mueller said, “I see a guy who can make some throws. It didn’t look like he was out of place, which was awesome.”

Roughrider main camp starts Sunday at Griffiths Stadium. As for the USask Huskies, they will gather for training camp in early August ahead of the Canada West season opener on Saturday September 5th in Winnipeg.
