Finishing In First

Oct 29, 2026 | 12:13 PM

The Huskies have it. Now they want to keep it. First place in the Canada West standings is on the line Friday night when the USask football team visits the UBC Thunderbirds. The 6-1 Huskies pulled out an October 23rd, 21-19 win over the Alberta Golden Bears, thanks in part to walk-off 41-yard field goal from kicker James Keane in the snow with a 40-kilometre wind at his back.

It was also a record setting game for quarterback Anton Amundrud who needed 123 passing yards to break the school’s career record. In brutal conditions, the fifth-year pivot had a 239-yard night.

The 5-2 T-Birds were also tested in a week seven, 21-17 win over the Regina Rams at Mosaic Stadium. UBC scored the game winning touchdown on a Riley Michaud run with 1:01 remaining.

Earlier this season the Huskies defeated the Thunderbirds by 10 points, meaning UBC would have to defeat Saskatchewan by 11 points or more on October 30 to finish in first place and have homefield advantage throughout the Canada West playoffs.
