Huskies host Dinos in playoff series

If the regular season is any indication, this weekend’s Canada West women’s hockey, best-of-three, quarterfinal between the Calgary Dinos and U of S Huskies, at Merlis Belsher Place, will be a tightly contested series. While the 4th-place Saskatchewan finished 14 points ahead of its first-round opponent, the two teams split their regular season games. On November 10th the Huskies dropped a 3-2 contest in Calgary, on the 11th the U of S pulled out a 3-1 win.

“We look back to see how they got their chances against us and how we got their chances against them”, said Huskie coach Steve Kook. They (Dinos) are playing a whole lot better than they were at that time.” Calgary won 8 of its final 12 regular season games dating back to December 1st.

Dinos leading scorer, Elizabeth Lang, had 30 points in 28 regular season games, while Courtney Kollman had 28 points in 27 contests. “Lang has been their top scorer for the past couple of years”, said Kook. “Kollman transferred over from Mount Royal with a national championship under her belt.”

The Huskies are led by leading scorer Sophie Lalor who had 22 points in 28 games this season. While Kook will be relying on big offensive contributions from Lalor and Kara Kondrat, who had 18 points in 28 games, he suggested all four lines will be looked to for contributions. “We are looking at three weekends of playoff series to get where we want to. That could be up to 9 more games, then you count nationals, there are12 more games. That’s the second half (of a season.) It’s important for us to stay fresh.”

Saskatchewan has experience in goal. 3rd year Huskie Colby Wilson put up 4 wins in 7 games this season while 5th year netminder, Camryn Drever, is confident after hitting a program best 15th win during the last weekend of the regular season. While taking pride in the accomplishment, Drever’s focus is on the big picture according to Kook. “She’s won so many games at every level, I would think that a couple of banners are more important to her.”

Kook talked with HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison on this edition of The Coach’s Show.
